Trump Nominates Sergio Gor as Next US Ambassador to India

Sergio Gor

US President Donald Trump has nominated his close aide, Sergio Gor, as the next United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Gor is currently the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and will continue in that role until his confirmation.

The nomination comes as US-India relations face challenges, including the 50 percent tariffs imposed on Indian goods. Trump described Gor as a trusted friend and advisor who has played a key role in his campaigns and government appointments.

Gor, 38, expressed his gratitude, saying it will be an honor to represent the United States in India and work as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.

Gor has a long political career. He worked for US Senators John McCain and Rand Paul and later became a consultant for Donald Trump Jr. He co-founded Winning Team Publishing, which published several books about Donald Trump. In November 2024, Trump appointed Gor as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, where he helped vet thousands of government appointees.

The US ambassador post in India has been vacant since Eric Garcetti left in January. Gor’s appointment is expected to help strengthen US-India relations and provide India direct access to the US administration. However, combining the roles of ambassador and special envoy is a new arrangement, and India will watch closely to understand his mandate.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the decision, calling Gor an excellent representative for the US in one of the country’s most important international relationships.

Born in 1986 in the former Soviet Union, Gor moved to the US in 1999. He studied at George Washington University and has been active in Republican politics for many years. His experience in government and politics positions him to handle complex issues in US-India relations.
