Dulquer’s excellence in period dramas takes center stage with Kantha.

Dulquer first stepped into a period-film lead role in 2014’s Njan, directed by Ranjith. In the film, he delivered a striking dual performance as KTN Kottoor—a poet, writer, freedom fighter, and revolutionary—and as Ravi Chandrasekhar. Even at just thirty, Dulquer carried the complexity of KTN Kottoor with impressive maturity, especially through his measured body language and emotional depth.

His transformation into iconic Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan in the 2018 Telugu film Mahanati remains another milestone. Despite not being the central protagonist, Dulquer left a lasting mark by capturing the charisma, style, and aura of the celebrated star from the 1960s and ’70s. The film earned him widespread applause for both authenticity and screen presence.

Dulquer later delivered more praise-worthy performances in Kurup (2021) as Sukumara Kurup, as Lieutenant Ram in Sita Ramam (2022), and as bank employee Bhaskara Kumar in the 2023 Telugu hit Lucky Bhaskar.

Now, with Kantha earning Dulquer some of the best reviews of his career, social media is buzzing with discussions on how consistently he aces period roles. Many point out that Dulquer brings not just the look, but also the discipline, physicality, and mannerisms needed to make such characters believable. The actor’s ability to make these efforts seem effortless on screen is what sets him apart. As Rana Daggubati remarked during the Kantha trailer launch, Dulquer has become the first name directors think of when crafting a period film in South Indian cinema.

What makes this even more impressive is that Dulquer has shown this finesse across Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu films—each with distinct cultures, body language, and linguistic rhythms. His adaptability highlights both his raw talent and his dedication to authenticity.

Produced jointly by Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, Kantha is set in the world of 1950s Madras and early Tamil cinema, featuring Samuthirakani, Rana Daggubati, and Bhagyashree Borse. It marks Wayfarer Films’ first foreign-language production, released in Tamil along with Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi versions.
Cinematography is by Danny Sanchez Lopez, music by Jhanu Chanter, editing by Llewelyn Anthony Gonsalves, with Sai Krishna Gadwal and Sujay James as executive producers and Shravan Palaparthi as line producer.

With Kantha winning over millions, Dulquer Salmaan has undeniably carved out a special throne for himself in Indian cinema—especially as one of the finest performers in period storytelling.
