Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, has become the center of viral rumours claiming that he has died in custody. The unverified claims began after a social media handle, Afghan Times, alleged that Khan had been “murdered” in jail. These reports remain unconfirmed, and no credible agency has verified them.
The rumours come amid reports that Khan has been denied meetings with his family and is being held in solitary confinement. His three sisters – Noreen, Aleema, and Uzma – staged a protest outside the jail, alleging that he has been “brutally assaulted” by prison authorities. Police reportedly manhandled the sisters during the protest.
Imran Khan, 72, the cricketer-turned-politician, has been in jail since 2023 following convictions in multiple corruption cases. He has repeatedly complained of harassment and mistreatment in custody, claiming actions against him are being carried out on orders from Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), were flooded with posts and videos – some purportedly showing Khan on a stretcher – though these clips are suspected to be doctored. Thousands of supporters were reported to have gathered outside the prison in response to the rumours, which spread widely with hashtags like #ImranKhan trending globally.
While speculation and online panic continue, authorities have not released any official confirmation regarding Khan’s health or the allegations of mistreatment.
