Udhampur, J&K: A major security operation is underway in Basantgarh, Udhampur district, after three suspected terrorists reportedly approached a local Bakerwal family late at night, asking for food. The tense incident triggered an immediate multi-agency manhunt in the remote, forested upper reaches of the region.
The encounter occurred in Chingla-Balotha village, a remote settlement nestled in the highlands of Basantgarh. According to officials, the house owner fled in panic and alerted the authorities, prompting Army, J&K Police, and CRPF teams to launch an extensive cordon-and-search operation.
“The movement of two to three suspected terrorists was reported in the forest belt. No contact has been established so far,” officials said on Saturday.
The search began on Friday after intelligence reports indicated suspicious movement in the Chingla-Balotha area, but intensified sharply after the Bakerwal family confirmed a direct encounter with the suspects.
High-Risk Infiltration Corridor
Basantgarh lies along a traditional infiltration route often exploited by militants crossing the International Border from Pakistan in the Kathua sector. From here, they move through rugged terrains toward Doda and Kishtwar before attempting to enter the Kashmir Valley.
The region has witnessed multiple encounters, hideout busts, and terror-related incidents in recent years, making it one of the most closely monitored forest corridors in Jammu.
Search Intensifies Across Forests and Villages
Security forces have expanded their operation to nearby hamlets and dense forests. Sniffer dogs, UAVs, and specialised tracking teams are deployed to detect footprints or movement trails. Villagers have been advised to remain indoors and report any unusual activity immediately.
While no encounter has occurred so far, forces remain on high alert, anticipating that the suspects may still be hiding in the dense forest cover. Officials added that the operation will continue until the suspects are traced or the area is fully sanitized.
