Kyiv, Ukraine: A Russian drone and missile attack targeted residential areas in Kyiv early on Saturday, killing one person and injuring seven others, including a 13-year-old child, city officials confirmed.
Explosions were reported across multiple districts, sparking fires in high-rise apartment buildings. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said four of the injured were hospitalised. The body of a man was recovered from the Sviatoshynskyi district in the west, while two women were wounded in Brovary to the east, where both missiles and drones struck residential zones.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed that “multiple targets on the capital’s outskirts” were hit and that air defence systems were actively responding to enemy drones.
This latest attack comes just days after a similar strike killed seven people in Kyiv, as Ukrainian negotiators prepared talks with US officials regarding a revised peace plan.
Context Amid Peace Negotiations
The bombardment occurred while Ukrainian and US delegations were preparing discussions in Geneva on an amended US peace plan, initially considered favourable to Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the upcoming talks aim to transform the Geneva agreements into practical steps for peace and security guarantees.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow will cease its offensive only if Ukrainian forces withdraw from territories claimed by Russia. He also confirmed that a US delegation, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to visit Moscow next week to discuss the draft peace plan.
Impact on Kyiv
- Fires erupted in multiple residential buildings, including a high-rise in the west and a central district, which was quickly brought under control.
- Emergency responders confirmed one fatality and seven injuries, including children.
- The attacks underscore the ongoing volatility in Kyiv despite international efforts toward a peace settlement.
This incident highlights the fragility of ceasefire and negotiation efforts, as violence continues to affect civilians while diplomatic talks unfold.
