Pathanamthitta: A major lapse in police protocol has resulted in the suspension of an Assistant Sub-Inspector for allegedly leaking confidential information in the high-profile Kappa bar fight case. ASI Binu Kumar, who was working at the Thiruvalla police station, has been suspended pending a detailed investigation.
According to reports, the officer leaked the remand report—including crucial information that could aid the accused in securing bail—before they were produced in court. The discovery led DIG Ajitha Begum to issue a suspension order.
The accused in the case were arrested from Bengaluru, and the remand report was prepared to be submitted during their court appearance. Normally, two copies of the remand report are submitted in court, and the defense lawyer receives a copy only after court proceedings begin. However, one copy went missing before the submission.
A preliminary inquiry revealed that ASI Binu Kumar secretly handed over the remand report to the accused’s lawyer in advance, enabling them to prepare bail-related strategies. The information allegedly changed hands in exchange for money.
Following this revelation, the officer was initially moved to the AR camp, but further investigation exposed the illegal handover of sensitive documents. A high-level probe has now been launched to determine additional disciplinary and legal action.
The investigation will be headed by Konni DySP, and further action against the suspended ASI — a native of Thiruvananthapuram — will be based on the findings of the detailed inquiry.
