Chinese President Xi Jinping pressed for an equal, multipolar world order during his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) leaders’ summit. He unveiled the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), calling for a fairer system that gives greater voice to developing nations while rejecting unilateralism and protectionist practices.
Xi’s remarks came on a day when US President Donald Trump criticized India shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Vision for Global Governance
Xi stressed the principles of sovereign equality, adherence to international law, and commitment to multilateralism. He emphasized that all nations—regardless of size, wealth, or power—must be equal participants in global decision-making.
“We should adhere to sovereign equality, respect international law, and practice multilateralism,” Xi said, warning against double standards and the imposition of “house rules” by a select few nations.
Focus on Multilateralism and Fairness
Xi underlined the central role of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization in maintaining global stability. He urged SCO members to strengthen solidarity, seek common ground despite differences, and work toward an inclusive global economy that benefits all.
Highlighting the upcoming Victory Day parade marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II, Xi said history should guide nations toward cooperation, fairness, and rejection of Cold War-era mentalities.
A Multipolar Future
Calling for an “equal and orderly multipolar world”, Xi urged SCO members to remain true to the organization’s mission and contribute to building a community with a shared future for humanity. He framed China’s stance as one of fairness, justice, and inclusivity in the face of global challenges.
