Jasprith Bumrah’s injury which seemed like a mild back spasm during the fifth Test against Australia is now reported to be worse. This means that Bumrah will sit out when England tours India for the ODIs and now even his status for the ICC Champions Trophy is uncertain. Indian selectors are not willing to take undue risks by pushing him back into action too quickly as they are trying to nurse him back to fitness. Bumrah’s involvement in the Champions Trophy will depend on an assessment of his fitness by NCA medical staff.
Meanwhile, pace bowler Mohammed Shami and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, too, who have not played most recent matches are being evaluated for their readiness to return to action. There is a growing expectation that Yashasvi Jaiswal will be added to India’s ODI squad, possibly to serve as a back-up opener during the series assigned by England. While Jaiswal is being treated as just an alternate opener, India is also eager to have their first choice players including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer in shape for these important games.
As the selectors are hoping to settle a piece of the puzzle for the upcoming tournaments, Bumrah’s injury scenario has led to some changes in the Indian team as well.
