After days of relentless rainfall across Kerala, a brief pause in showers on Tuesday provided momentary relief to residents. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the worst may not be over, as a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify monsoon winds across the region.
Red Alert for Three Northern Districts
In its latest advisory, the IMD has issued a red alert for Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode, signaling the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and potential flooding. These northern districts are expected to bear the brunt of the intensified monsoon activity in the coming 24 hours.
Orange and Yellow Alerts Across Other Regions
While the northern districts are under red alert, an orange alert has been declared across most of Kerala’s remaining districts, indicating a high probability of heavy rainfall and strong winds. However, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha have been placed under a yellow alert, cautioning residents about scattered, moderate to heavy rainfall.
Monsoon Strengthening Over Bay of Bengal
The low-pressure area is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal by Tuesday, fueling stronger monsoon currents across the southwestern coast. Meteorologists note that this system could lead to widespread showers, gusty winds, and rising river levels, particularly in the Western Ghats and coastal districts.
Respite Before Next Spell
Although rainfall intensity weakened slightly across central and northern Kerala on Tuesday morning, many low-lying areas continue to remain waterlogged, and landslide risks persist in hilly terrain. Emergency teams are on high alert, especially in flood-prone taluks.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid travel through flooded routes, and follow evacuation instructions wherever issued. Fishermen have also been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions
