Actor-turned-politician TVK Vijay is facing serious backlash after hosting an Iftar event in Chennai, which has now resulted in a police complaint being filed against him for allegedly insulting the sentiments of Muslims.
The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, a respected Islamic organization, has taken strong objection to the way the event was conducted, accusing Vijay of disrespecting Islamic traditions and misusing a religious gathering for political optics.
Accusations from the Muslim Community
According to media reports, the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath lodged the complaint at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office. The organization’s treasurer, Syed Kous, openly condemned the event and Vijay’s role in organizing it.
He stated that the event was not just poorly arranged, but also included the presence of “drunkards and rowdies” who had no connection with fasting or Iftar. Such a gathering, he said, was an insult to the sanctity of Ramadan and the Muslim faith.
Syed Kous further alleged that Vijay’s security team—reportedly foreign guards—treated attendees in an inhumane and disrespectful manner, likening it to treating them “like cows.” According to the complaint, there was no proper apology or acknowledgement from Vijay for how offensive the event turned out to be.
Political Stunt Gone Wrong?
This entire incident raises serious questions about Vijay’s intentions behind organizing the Iftar. With his entry into politics under Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), it appears this event was nothing more than a calculated political move to gain support from the Muslim community ahead of the 2026 elections.
However, rather than building goodwill, the event has clearly backfired. The Muslim community’s reaction and the official police complaint prove that Vijay’s attempt at religious outreach was seen as shallow, insincere, and deeply disrespectful.
Despite donning a skull cap and sitting through prayers, the lack of proper planning, cultural sensitivity, and crowd control turned what could have been a respectful interfaith event into a major public embarrassment.
Silence from Vijay and TVK
What’s even more alarming is the complete silence from Vijay and his party. No statement has been released addressing the complaint or the accusations made by the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath.
This lack of accountability only adds to the growing criticism that Vijay is using religion and minority sentiments for political branding, without any real understanding or respect for the values involved.
A Troubling Trend
This is not the first time Vijay has tried to position himself as a champion of minorities. Recently, he also made headlines for accusing the BJP of anti-Muslim politics and speaking out against the Waqf Amendment Bill. But incidents like this expose the hypocrisy behind the image he’s trying to build.
If Vijay truly intended to stand with the Muslim community, he should have ensured their traditions and religious sentiments were honored—not trampled on in the name of political theatre.
Conclusion
As the 2026 elections draw closer, Vijay’s every move will be scrutinized, especially when it involves faith-based outreach. If this Iftar controversy is any indication, his lack of genuine connection and respect toward the communities he’s trying to appeal to may do more harm than good to his political ambitions.
