Amit Shah Defends Jailed Ministers Bill, Says Morality Beyond Elections

Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly defended the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks the removal of Union and State ministers jailed for more than 30 days on charges of corruption or serious crimes. Calling the Bill a measure to “restore political morality,” Shah said it would safeguard democracy against the “shamelessness” of leaders clinging to power from jail.

Rejecting opposition claims of misuse, Shah clarified that the law applies equally to ruling and opposition leaders and only to offences punishable with five years or more. He said courts serve as safeguards, as frivolous cases would not sustain beyond bail hearings.

Shah criticised the Congress and Rahul Gandhi for double standards, recalling Gandhi’s opposition to the 2013 ordinance protecting convicted MPs. He stressed that morality in politics must remain constant, independent of electoral victories or defeats. Confident of securing a two-thirds majority, Shah said the Bill would uphold democratic values and strengthen the moral foundation of governance.
