India’s Shreyas Iyer Recovering After Rare Spleen Injury in Sydney ODI

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is currently recovering in a Sydney hospital after sustaining a lacerated spleen during the third One-Day International (ODI) against Australia on Saturday.

The 30-year-old cricketer was injured while attempting a challenging catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the 34th over. Running backward, Iyer landed awkwardly on his side and immediately required medical attention. He was treated on the field before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Providing an update, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday that he has been in regular contact with Iyer.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not specified a timeline for Iyer’s return to action. In a statement issued on Monday, the board said:

“The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his recovery.
