In a move that has reignited global debate over nuclear policy, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to resume nuclear weapons testing — the first such order in more than 30 years.
Trump stated that the decision was necessary to keep pace with nuclear advancements by Russia and China, both of which he accused of running extensive weapons testing programs.
“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis,” Trump wrote on social media, shortly before meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The U.S. continues to hold the largest nuclear arsenal in the world,” he said. “Russia follows closely behind, with China a distant third.
