Mumbai: Bollywood legend Dharmendra, often called the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 89 at his home in Mumbai on Monday, November 24, as confirmed by IANS.
The veteran actor had recently been hospitalized at Breach Candy Hospital due to respiratory complications. Over a remarkable six-decade career, Dharmendra starred in countless iconic films and became a household name, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema. His final appearance on screen is slated to be in the film Ikkis, set to release on December 25.
Dharmendra is survived by his two wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his six children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, Ajeeta, and Vijeta.
He made his acting debut in 1960 with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and went on to deliver performances in classics like Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, Ankhen, Dharam Veer, Apne, and many more. His work earned him numerous accolades, including several Filmfare Awards and the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, in 2012.
Beyond acting, Dharmendra also made his mark as a producer; his film Ghayal, starring his son Sunny Deol, won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8 in Ludhiana, Punjab, he married Prakash Kaur in 1954 before entering the film industry, and later married Hema Malini.
Even in his later years, Dharmendra remained a vibrant presence on social media. He shared videos promoting healthy living, organic farming, and simple life lessons—often driving his tractor or tending to his farm. His most recent film appearance was in the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
His passing leaves a void in Bollywood that will be deeply felt by fans, colleagues, and the industry alike.
