Kochi: The Munnar police on Tuesday registered a case against the parents of the 10-month-old baby who fell off the lap of her mother near Eravikulam national
park on Sunday night.

The case was registered under sections 308 of the IPC and 75 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act.

Besides, the Child Rights Commission has called for reports from the district collector and the district police chief regarding the incident.

According to police, the mother told the police that she was asleep when the baby fell off her lap. “As a preliminary procedure, we have registered the case.
Further action will be taken only after a detailed probe into the incident,” an official said.

Meanwhile, she also reportedly told the police that she had taken some pills for headache on their way back home from a pilgrimage that caused her to fall asleep.

However, the police were yet to confirm this.

The incident happened near Eravikulam national park on Munnar-Marayur road in Idukki district around 9.30 p.m. on Sunday when the vehicle took a sharp
curve near the Rajamala checkpost.

The couple and their child were part of a group of family members who were returning home after a pilgrimage to Palani Murugan temple. The parents were
identified as Satheesh and Sathyabhama, hailing from Mullarikudy in Udumbanchola taluk, Idukki.

The hired multi-utility vehicle travelled about 35 km when the mother realised the child was missing.

By then, the forest officials, who noticed the crawling and crying baby on the CCTV installed at the check post, had taken care of the injured and bleeding child and informed all nearby police stations. The baby was handed over to the parents around 2 a.m. on Monday.
