Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the tragic demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. In a heartfelt message on social media platform X, Modi conveyed India’s solidarity with Iran during this difficult time.

“Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic passing of Raisi. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow,” Modi’s post on X stated. He also highlighted Raisi’s significant role in strengthening bilateral relations between India and Iran.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined in expressing condolences, expressing shock over the sudden death of President Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash. Jaishankar recalled his interactions with them, extending sympathies to their families and the Iranian people.

The fatal crash occurred as President Raisi and his delegation were returning from a visit to Iran’s border with Azerbaijan. Despite extensive rescue efforts, including assistance from neighboring Turkey, the helicopter wreckage was found after hours of searching. Sadly, there were no survivors, with the chopper engulfed in flames upon discovery.

Iranian state media confirmed the tragic outcome, reporting “no sign of life” at the crash site. An official informed Reuters that President Raisi’s helicopter was completely destroyed in the accident.

The international community mourns the loss of President Raisi and stands in solidarity with Iran during this period of grief and shock.
