The Delhi government has started the admission process for the Atal Drishti Girls’ Hostel in Timarpur, a specialised residential facility designed to support visually impaired young women pursuing higher education in the capital.
The hostel, operated by the Department of Social Welfare, aims to assist students who arrive in Delhi for studies but are unable to secure accommodation in college hostels. The initiative is intended to ensure safe, accessible, and affordable housing for visually impaired female learners.
Strict Eligibility Criteria Announced
According to the official notification, admissions are open only to unmarried, totally blind women who are bonafide residents of Delhi and under 25 years of age.
Partially blind applicants, as well as students enrolled in correspondence or evening courses, are not eligible.
The guidelines further specify that candidates must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board or completed a degree from a Delhi University college. Blind daughters of government or defence personnel posted outside Delhi may also be considered, subject to seat availability.
An admission committee will conduct interviews for final selection. Chosen students must submit a refundable caution deposit of ₹500 or a surety bond for the same amount.
Admission Not Guaranteed; Annual Re-Entry Required
The department has clarified that admission or re-admission is not an entitlement. No mid-session entries will be accepted, and students must apply within 30 days of the notification’s release.
Residents are also required to seek re-admission at the start of each academic year, with continuation contingent on adherence to hostel rules and satisfactory conduct.
Hostel Built at ₹13.42 Crore
Constructed at a cost of ₹13.42 crore, the Atal Drishti Girls’ Hostel was inaugurated in September during the Seva Pakhwada observance near Delhi University.
The facility marks a significant step toward improving educational access and providing dedicated support for visually impaired women studying in Delhi.
